The afternoon sun was shining as we picked our way across the sands of Traeth Benllech, with the morning shower now just a memory.

The 9.37am bus at Pentraeth had whisked us swiftly to Rhos Lligwy - would it really take us hours and hours to walk back? Walking down to Traeth Lligwy we found the grey skies above matched by a grey sea. Despite the huge car park the toilets were locked, as elsewhere along the coast, then along came the shower, and Mickey left his walking pole behind.

After that, things looked up. The easy path led us along the coast, past the site of the 1859 sinking of the Royal Charter and on to Moelfre. The bronze reliefs depicting the scene, and the equally striking bronze statue of Dic Evans, the 20th century coxwain of the Moelfe lifeboat, definitely demanded a return visit with more time to spare.

Then it was on over the headland and down to Traeth Bychan, where the out of season empty tables and benches made for a comfortable lunch stop. Blue patches where appearing above us as we followed the path past hillside holiday chalets before finding new handrails and boardwalks, evidence of the efforts of the Silver Slashers, the Ynys Mon Ramblers working group.

Traeth Benlech came next, the easy walk across the golden sands followed by afternoon tea (well, beers, soft drinks and coffee) being taken on the sundeck of the holiday club at Trwyn Dwlban, taking in the lovely views. Good preparation for the somewhat muddier path around the edge of Traeth Coch, which led us to a nice inland route back to Pentraeth. After long consultations the three GPs folks among us decided that we had walked 10.7 miles.

Which is why it did take us hours and hours to walk back to Pentraeth. But it was worth it!

Dave
