Three days ahead and a mixed weather forecast for Thursday’s walk. No matter, sun or rain, there should be no pain, with an easy mainly sea level walk along the Menai Straits. There are fine views of the Straits, both the bridges and also of Plas Newydd, with its impressive waterfront,.
Those walking from Caernarfon will keep dry feet on the shared use path to Felinheli, but after lunch, and the meet with the afternoon walkers, things will be a little different, the paths being
quite muddy in places. The route through the Vaynol Estate takes us past the spooky Gothic style family mausoleum of the estate owners, the Assheton-Smith family. Leaving the estate we walk just above the shore line (on a path worked on by ramblers in the C&D Tim Tacio Llybrau) to reach the impressive might of the Britannia Bridge, and a chance to look at one of the lions guarding the bridge.
Walking under the bridge we follow the water’s edge again before passing through Treborth and on to reach the Menai Bridge. The walk across the bridge, with frequent stops to look at the lovely views, is the highlight of the day. On Anglesey we drop down to the Belgian Promenade before walking along the Straits under Telford’s masterpiece and on into Menai Bridge. Time for a panad or something stronger, or perhaps a direct line for the bus stop.
Look forward to seeing you on Thursday.
