The weather looks reasonable for our walk along the Menai Straits this Saturday, 1st March, with some morning sunshine likely before the chance of showers later in the afternoon. The start and finish at Llyn Rhos du is accessible by bus, No 42 Bangor - Newborough. We will be catching the 10.42am bus from the junction near Llyn Rhos du to Plas Cefn Mawr, then walking down the lane to Moel y Don, opposite Felinheli.
After that it will be a mix of field, wood and lane walking, plus two stretches of shingle beach. High tide is just after 9am, so we should not get our feet wet. Plenty of activity on the water as we look across to Plas Menai water sports centre, then we skirt old Llanidan House before returning to the coast by Sw Mor Mon, the high end Anglesey Sea Salt concern.
We later pass the former Mermaid Inn, still shown on OS maps though closed for many years - no doubt a great disappointment to many people. Doing this walk prompted me to contact the OS about it, so perhaps that will change. Near the end of the walk we reach the only 'challenge' of the day, the high stepping stones at Gatehouses Ford. After that a mile or so of flat walking brings us back to the main road, the bus stop and Llyn Rhos du.
The walk is around nine miles long, hardly rising above sea level, the only hills today will be across the Menai Straits. Look forward to seeing you on Saturday.
