Some walks are made in heaven. Guto's was one of them. A repeat from last year, which was mist after the first 100x. We all asked Guto to put it on again. He did, but he could not of hoped for better weather. A hot sunny day, a cooling breeze, long views, it could not be more different from the previous year. Only twelve people took advantage of this splendid walk. Guto leads at a brisk pace, while declaring that he is taking it steadily, fortunately all kept up with him after the first steep ascent. In the open, treeless landscape it is hard to navigate even in perfect weather. But Guto had done several recces and was directionally perfect. We were heading for Tal y Fan, with lunch taken just beneath the summit, with Guto guarding our rucksacks we all completed the final scramble to the top.
On our return Cal a new walker from Bangor University, and testing the Ramblers waters amazed us all by walking for miles in bare feet. Having been recently in the West Indies, it was no problem for him, he was enjoying every step.
Then we suddenly lost four people from of the walk, they were nowhere to be seen. Relief they had been on a mercy mission to release a tangled sheep, with barbed wire around its body, even its neck. It was released after a struggle and without a word of thanks, ran off. Our missing four received a round of applause on their return.
We were by then, looking forward to returning to the Fairy Glen Inn, where Guto on his 70th birthday, declared the drinks were on him. It did not seem right, but we gave in to his invitation without a struggle. Thanks Guto for a very special walk on a very special day.
