"Two Bridges" Walk Wednesday 9th March, with options of 9 or 5 miles.
Led by Dave (Woods), in weather we have been dreaming about, the longer walk started from Caernarfon following the bike route, we then met up with 7 others at the lunch stop in Felinheli, for the remaining 5 miles. We set off again about 1.30pm and conditions underfoot were about to deteriorate dramatically, as a result there will have been a lot of boot cleaning last night!! That said, it was a wonderful walk, with many points of interest, including the Gothic style mausoleum, the resting place of the Assheton-Smiths, who owned Dinorwic Slate Quarry and the Vaynol Estate. The Lions on Brittania Bridge, and a display of a section of Robert Stevenson's original tubular train line, which was destroyed by fire in 1970. Before reaching Thomas Telford's Menai suspension bridge we had excellent views of Ynys Gorad Goch the small island between the two bridges. We walked over the suspension bridge before turning left to go under it, giving us an excellent viewpoint to appreciate the skill in building such a magnificent structure. We then proceeded into Menai Bridge town just in time for the tea shop to put up the shutters!! However, the bus we needed to catch was about to depart so we rather surprised the driver by appearing from nowhere to suddenly fill his bus, we alighted in Bangor and after just 2 minutes the Caernarfon bus appeared. So well done Dave on arranging the buses to be so convenient, shame about the tea shop!!!
A brilliant day, the sun was a real bonus maybe Spring has arrived. Many thanks Dave.
Joan
