Storm Abigail might have been expected later in the day, but the talking point for the eleven of us gathered at Llyn Rhos Ddu was the warm sunshine and big blue sky. Micky led the way west into a strong wind, to reveal the highlight of the day, as the last gap in the sand hills revealed thundering surf and a white capped Irish Sea - brilliant. Unfortunately, weather wise it was all downhill after that, as within a half hour the blue sky disappeared and storm clouds gathered!
However, that did not stop the chatter as we walked along the beach and through the inch or two of ebbing tide to reach Ynys Llanddwyn. We might all have been there before, but hanging on to the wall in the gale hitting the old lighthouse, peering through the windows of the 19th century pilots cottages and walking through the old church (well, Chris and me anyway), it is still a magic island to visit.
The changing weather (which actually soon improved again) saw Mickey lead us on a nice route through the forest, such a contrast to the dark mass of most of the forests that we know. Passing near to Newborough we had some more culture, looking at the remains of Llys Rhosyr, the 13th century palace of Llewelyn Fawr. Gareth Roberts of Menter Fachwen, the enthusiastic guest speaker at our AGM, would have been very impressed!
So thanks for a good day out, Mickey, certainly one to blow any cobwebs away.
