At the request of the Welsh Council Executive Committee (WCEC - grand title!!!) that met in Cardiff yesterday I am about to undertake some work throughout Wales on how the RA might increase numbers.
As I know most of you who use this forum I thought it would be useful to gather together some of your views and if you're willing to respond on this forum can I ask:
1. What attracted you to the Ramblers?
2. What do you think puts people off joining the Ramblers?
3. What are the positive aspects of our own Group?
4. Is there anything that you think the Ramblers could do to increase membership?
If you prefer you can always talk to me in due course.
Best wishes and have a Happy Christmas.
Denis

Thanks for the opportunity to respond to your request for ideas on recruitment. A familiar request from membership societies. There is no silver bullet. I will respond at length soon. We are behind on our Christmas preparations following a visit to Jordan.
Edmund and Rachel.

As with any first time meeting with a new group the reception by established group members is all important, so being friendly and welcoming will make it a lot more likely that first timers will return and maybe join as i did.
For new walkers who find it hard to keep up there is nothing more demoralising than a group waiting for you as you struggle upward lungs bursting only to have the leader start off as soon as you have caught up.
Success breeds its own problems; personally I do not really want to be part of a walking group of 20 + and the main reason I did not join Cymdeithas Edward LLwyd was because their walks seemed to be of 30 plus.
I would also guess that non walkers are put off by worrying about having the right gear and have a picture of us Ramblers with poles and kit (true), so perhaps publicity for taster short walks should specify what kit is essential and what is not.

I think that the North Wales programme is a real attraction with it's choice of frequent and varied walks.

Mae'n wir ella bod y rhan fwya ohonon ni'n siarad Saesneg fel iaith cyntaf. Felly bydd creoso mawr i chi sy'n siarad Cymraeg i ymuno a ni a helpu hybu iaith yr ardal.

First sticking to your original questions.

1, We were always looking forward to joining the RA on retirement.

2. You can not please everyone. People have many needs. Racism and Ageism are alive and well in Wales. We are not ashamed that the RA attracts the 50+. Families with younger children have other needs, as do people of student age.

3. The programmed walks provide a safe supportive group when venturing into the mountains. There is more to walking than putting one foot forward after the other! Many of our members live alone, for many differing reasons, they are very appreciative of our Group. A rule of attempting some kind of get together after the walk, is really good, though not always possible. We agree with Margaret's points (MEL).
We say we are friendly and are out to meet people, but how many people got to know Fiona or Nigel on the Fort Belan walk, two brand new members It does take effort to single out people. Our finest example is Chris (Irish) no one escapes her notice and she has everyone's names, before the walk is over.
HQ RA are the least able to recruit accept in the most general way. The Groups are KEY. They are at the coal face in all the areas of the UK. Without the Groups there would no London HQ or Welsh Executive Committee!

General.
We have some challenges locally. We are small pond in which to fish, and very spread. We have no natural central point in which to meet. It will very interesting how Dave's first social evening works out in Beddgelert. We shall be there.
