The walk on Sunday takes us up the Penygroes road from Rhyd Ddu, as far as Llyn y Dywarchen, for a different approach to Mynydd Mawr. The rocky, steep sided Clogwyngarreg is on the other side of the lake, high above the old farmsteads and copper mining remains down in Drws y Coed. We follow the path around the lake, then head north to Bwlch y Moch to join the path leading up to Mynydd Mawr via Foel Rudd.
There are fine views from the summit of Mynydd Mawr, and hopefully we will see them. However, at the moment the forecast for Sunday is not very good, with extensive cloud and very high winds. The exposed climb to Foel Rudd is not the best place to be in a gale, and as a believer in walking for pleasure rather than punishment, I might vary the walk by keeping to lower ground. Hopefully though, by Sunday things will have altered.
Wherever we get to, the Cwellyn Arms or Ty Mawr Tea Room will provide warmth and refreshments when we return to Rhyd Ddu.
