Having visited Shropshire and the Peak District in the last few years, for 2014 we are staying closer to home. We are in Llangollen just before the start of the International Music Eisteddfod, so the town should be looking bright and breezy for our weekend stay. It might be a little busy, but then, how often do we get the chance to chat with singers and dancers from around the world?

We recently had a sunny/showery reconnoitre of Llangollen and the Dee Valley, or Nant Dyfrdwy. With my map and Guto’s GPS we think we have sorted the walks, and with aroma and taste to guide us, the eating spots for the three nights have also slotted into place.

To give you a taster for the walks, the Friday afternoon takes us along the Llangollen canal to the Horseshoe Falls before we climb Velvet Hill, returning via Valle Crucis. One of the day walks will lead up to Trefor Rocks then on to the World Heritage site of Froncysyllte Aqueduct for lunch and a browse, with a choice of walking back to Llangollen via the Ceitiog Trail or an easier option, along the canal tow path.

The other day walk sees us crossing the moors to Eglwyseg Mountain before returning via Worlds End and the Offas Dyke path. Plus, sometime on one of the days we will be finding time for a visit to Castell Dinas Bran. For those walking on Monday morning, the plan is to travel back along the A5 to Glyndyfrdwy before walking a circular route up to Vivod Mountain and the North Berwyn Way.

We sampled Fouzi’s Café, a nice vaguely Italian style restaurant, were the food was very good, so we have booked a room there for two nights, with dinner at the Bridge Hotel on the Saturday evening. Nearer our visit Guto will be contacting everyone with menu choices.

If you would like to come along there is still room at the camp site (tents, caravans and camper vans), or join those staying in B&Bs, bunkhouses and hotels in Llangollen. Some people are arriving on Thursday, some on Friday. We need to know numbers for booking the evening meals, so please contact me at davvewoods@toucansurf.com or 01286 650696 if you are joining us.

Dave.
