Absolute amazement; a wet and dull morning in Tremadog square and 23 brave souls turned up for Chris's walk. Hopefully a sign of things to come, the rain eased and on the initial uphill stretch there were good views looking towards the upper crags and back over Porth. Just after yours truly had told visitors from Ynys Mon that there were superb views over the Lleyn once we reached the top, the cloud dropped in a big way and visibility dropped to a few yards. We were a bit spread out and the back marker and leader disappeared from view at opposite ends of the "chain".
We were fairly quickly re-united but careful to keep together from then. As visibility improved slowly, we saw several people on the ridge above us. They were a group from Aberystwyth who joined us for the rest of the day. After descending from the 'heights' we reached what we had called the 'first drop out point' and two of the group decided to return to Tremadog.
As visibility improved further, the intensity of the rain increased and an executive decision was made to cut out some of the planned route and stick to the narrow roads rather than to wade across waterlogged fields and risk life and limb on several slate stiles which are known to be lethal when wet. Part of the route, past the cottage Erwsuran was done in the opposite direction to the original plan and the easier route back to Tremadog was taken rather than the steep descent passing the upper crags.
Several of the group concluded the day by visiting the 'Fleece' for liquid refreshment and, despite the inclement weather and reduced distance (almost) everyone seemed in good spirits and agreed that it had been an enjoyable, if soaking, day.
