The weekend in Castleton, 8th-11th July, 2011
Castleton proved to be the perfect place for a weekend of walking and 17 of the CaD Ramblers made the most of what was on offer. We had selected our own accommodation – half using the nearby campsite, the rest of us using the Youth Hostel and a variety of B & B establishments.
Our leaders (Chris, Ian and John) provided a range of walks:
Friday: 15 of us did an afternoon walk above the village via Cave Dale, crossing the moor for a picnic lunch with fine views of Peveril Castle and the surrounding hills. We descended via Winnats Pass, which most of us had driven down on our arrival – walking showed the true drama of the terrain and was much safer. This was the site of an access rally of 10,000 ramblers in 1932 following the earlier mass trespass on Kinder Scout – we owe to them the creation of the National Parks and the Right to Roam. We were early for our trip down the Speedwell Cavern but they let us in and we enjoyed a boat trip 300 feet below ground - unlike the miners who had worked in dangerous conditions here a century before. Relieved to be in the fresh air again, despite a heavy shower, we returned over a gentle path to Castleton to our accommodation. We all met up for a sustaining evening meal at the Cheshire Cheese Inn.
Saturday: 12 tackled Kinder Scout via Grindsbrook and rather more peat bogs than required – nearly lost one walker in the mire but gained 3 for a time who were a bit lost. Kinder Downfall was the dramatic site of the mass trespass so we stopped to show our appreciation. Mixed weather but glorious sunshine for the walk on Kinder, down Jacobs Ladder to a farm where most of us enjoyed tea and scrumptious cakes – watched by the beady eyes of several chickens.
Reunited with the rest of the group we ate an excellent meal at the Old Nags Head.
Sunday: all 17 enjoyed an easier walk along the ridge above the Ladybower, Derwent and Howden Dams, returning by their banks – not a peat bog in sight. Four were able to avoid some road walking and rain by taking the bus towards the end – the bus route is threatened with closure so we did our bit to ensure this doesn’t happen. There was the chance to visit the Dambuster museum at Derwent dam and a well dressing in Bamford on the return journey.
Another delicious meal and birthday cake (best wishes EP) at the Old Nags Head rounded off the day.
Monday: some had to hit the road but 11 of us had a final walk from Monsal Head via the river Wye to Litton mill before returning along the old railway line and tunnels for lunch in the Cafe or Stables Bar. As with all the walks the wild flowers were prolific and there were patches of orchids and water forgetmenots here.

Thank you to our leaders for all their hard work in planning this weekend – recceing walks, sampling food/drink, forcing down ice cream – all for our benefit.

Looking forward to the next weekend away.
