You now have an opportunity to join a Volunteer
Working Party
to help maintain our Public Rights of Way.

Gwynedd Council have now finally agreed for us to do voluntary work, and give us full support. Although this change of mind may well be as a result of the cutbacks it does now give us the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of the Silver Slashers on Anglesey. Over the past 4 years they have cleared and opened up a very creditable 60 k.m's of footpaths. The way is now clear for us to follow their example, and also encourage our Community Councils to take an interest in their Public Rights of Way, a very valuable legacy we are all so very grateful for. The work we do will have to comply with established professional standards and full training will be arranged. Prior to work being done the Council will notify the land owner, and all equipment and footpath furniture will be delivered to the site.

We already survey a random selection of paths each year and full details of these and the many footpath complaints are kept on a database for each Community. Communities are now being encouraged to establish their own web page, with links to circular walks. This will encourage local people to use, and keep open the footpaths. Y Felinheli is a pilot scheme, and full details of the walks available in this area are being posted up in Google Earth with walk details and history.

We now need to get two teams together to each cover Arfon and Dwfor areas. A leader will be required for each team. Most of the work will be the straight forward clearing of vegetation, signage etc. When we have the teams, training and initial supervision for placement of stiles, board walks over marshy ground will be arranged.

If you are interested in taking part in this very worthwhile cause would you please contact me, and many thanks for your support.

Arfon / Dwfor FP Secretary.
